What to Consider When Choosing Light Fixtures for Your Home

December 24, 2018 By Martin MacFarlane Leave a Comment

Whether you are remodeling a space or you just want to add a little pizazz, the light fixture in the room should not be overlooked. This one item can become a statement piece and a focal point. It can add a modern touch to an older home and it can set the mood for any space. Before you choose just any light fixture at your local store, here are several things you need to consider.

The Atmosphere of the Space

What is the purpose of the room? What type of tasks do you plan to complete in the space? What mood do you hope to set for the room? The answer to these questions will help you choose the best light fixture for your home. For example, in the bathroom, you want a simple, yet very bright light, whereas in your dining room you may want a more fancy fixture such as a chandelier that gives the feeling of elegance and class.

The Size of the Light

Choosing the right light fixture isn’t just about choosing a design and a style that you like, it is also about choosing the right size of light fixture. If the light fixture is too small, it won’t provide the amount of light that you desire and can seem out of proportion, but if you choose a light fixture that is too large, it can appear very overpowering and take away from the charm of the space.

To determine the right size of light fixture for your room, you want to determine the diameter and the height of the light fixture.

According to Lumens, to determine the diameter, do the following:

1. Measure the length and width of the room.

2. Add the two numbers together.

3. Change the feet to inches (do not convert, just keep the number the same)

For example:

If you have a room that is 10 feet by 15 feet, add 10 + 15 = 25 feet.

Swap feet to inches so your final answer is 25 inches. You need a light fixture with a diameter of 25 inches.

To determine the height, do the following:

1. Determine how high the ceiling is in your room.

2. Multiply the height by 2.5” to 3”

3. Similar to finding the diameter, swap the feet to inches.

For example, if your ceiling is 10 feet high, you will measure 10 x 2.5 to 3 = 25 to 30 feet

Swap feet to inches so you want a light fixture that is 25 to 30 inches tall

The Future of the Space

As you look at your options for light fixtures in your home, you want to consider both your current and future designs. Avoid choosing light fixtures that will go out of style quickly or if you have plans to sell your home in the future, try to choose a very popular and simple fixture so it doesn’t become an eyesore for potential buyers. For more home improvement ideas, visit Markham real estate agent Martin MacFarlane’s blog, or if you are ready to sell your Markham home, contact him today.
