Cornell is a planned neighbourhood in the city of Markham and was conceived in the 1990’s. The homes in the area are a great mix of townhomes, semi-detached and detached houses with garages and laneways at the rear. The community is built with central amenities in order to contain suburban sprawl. Cornell was seen by the Markham City Council as a way to deter the ongoing sprawl by encouraging residential density.
Cornell is home to the Markham-Stouffville Hospital, a state-of-the-art community centre, great schools and convenient retail amenities. There are also great parks, two of which are set up with outdoor ice rinks during the winter. There are also future plans for a massive 30+ acre park which should prove to be an amazing setting.
To sum up Cornell in a nutshell, it is a wonderfully diverse family friendly neighbourhood where its residents (including myself) have great pride of ownership and a strong sense of community. Most homeowners in the neighbourhood tend to stay awhile!

Subdivisions Within Cornell
Cornell can be further separated by development phases:
- Grand Cornell – located near Highway 7 and 9th Line and built by H&R, GreenPark and CountryWide
- Upper Cornell – located near 16th Avenue and 9th Line and built by Aspen Ridge & Beaverbrook
- Cornell Village – located between 16th Avenue and Highway 7 along 9th Line; built by Mattamy Homes & Ballantry Homes
- Cornell Rouge – located East of Cornell Centre Blvd between 16th ave & Hwy #7 built my Maddison Homes & Forest Hill Homes.
The remaining portions of Cornell are still agricultural, but those lands are quickly disappearing with new homes being constructed on a regular basis.
