On March 19, spring officially arrived. This means it is now the perfect time to get outside and get to work. There are many spring home improvement tasks you can complete around your Markham home that will prevent thousands of dollars in repair costs, will get you ready for the upcoming summer season, and will increase the value of your property. Here are just five home improvement tasks you should add to your to-do list this spring.
Update Your Front Porch
Give your front porch a much-needed cleaning. Sweep away all dirt and dust. Lay down a new welcome mat, hang a wreath on the door, and add a planter of fresh flowers nearby. This is also a great time to give your front door a little TLC. If the door is in poor condition, it may be time to completely replace it. If not, you may consider painting it and installing some updated hardware.
Rake the Dead Grass
After all the snow has melted around your yard, your grass will appear flat and matted down. To give it some life once again and to help it grow, grab a rake and clear out all of the dead grass, leaves, and other debris that can accumulate under the snow. Complete this task before you pull out the mower and mow your grass for the first time this season.
Apply Mulch
Mulch is a type of material, such as compost, bark, or grass clippings, that you apply to the surface of the soil in your yard. Mulch has many benefits such as retains moisture in the soil, reduces the temperature of the soil during the summer, and helps to keep weeds at bay. Plus, it greatly improves the look of many large flowerbeds.
Clean Up Your Roof
If possible, grab a ladder and get up on your roof. Spend a little time removing all dead leaves and other debris that may have accumulated in this area. You may also want to spend some time cleaning out your gutters as well. These items can become clogged from leaves, twigs, and other debris and you want them clear for the spring rain.
In addition to cleaning your roof, the spring is the perfect time for a roof inspection. During this inspection, you want to check for any potential damage such as missing or loose shingles, missing fasteners, etc. If you have no roof experience, make sure you hire a professional to complete this task for you and to make all necessary repairs.
Paint The Trim
Adding a fresh coat of paint to your home’s trim, exterior railings, shutters, etc., can greatly enhance your home’s curb appeal. Plus, it doesn’t take much time. Just make sure that you use the right type of paint for this project and you choose colours that will complement your house.
