Markham offers a diverse and rich community to live in with a variety of cultural attractions as well as recreation and art activities to choose from. As Markham continues to expand, so do the expectations for access to art culture programs in the area. By providing a rich cultural experience to its residents, Markham becomes a more prosperous and welcoming place for all. Here are just a few of the many cultural and artistic experiences you can find within the city:
Markham Museum
This is a 25-acre site that offers public and school programs, research facilities and a venue for private events. It’s located at 9350 Markham Rd and it has become one of the focal points of this Heritage District. It is the perfect place to bring a family with its wide open spaces including heritage gardens and an orchard. While you’re there you’ll be able to visit re-created family homes and businesses as you’re brought back in time to a Markham that existed many years ago.
Flato Markham Theatre
Come and enjoy one of the 300+ live performances presented every year that showcase Markham’s cultural diversity. These performances include family entertainment, comedy shows, concerts, live theater and more. An array of international, national and local professionals take to the stage from September to May to showcase their talents.
The Frederick Horsman Varley Art Gallery
The art exhibitions at the gallery change frequently and feature a variety of artistic talent from around the world. There are also art-related hands-on activities offered at the gallery to help visitors get a better appreciation of the visual arts. As well, studio workshops, school programs and group tours are offered that appeal to the very young, seniors and everyone in between.
In 2008, the Town of Markham established a culture department that was dedicated to the town’s cultural development. Since then an online directory has been established showing Markham’s cultural assets and the department is also working on a 10-year plan to build a creative Markham that all can be proud of. As well, the Markham Small Business Enterprise Centre is working with other agencies to produce events to help artists and cultural entrepreneurs in the local area climb the ladder of success.
