Eating local is possible this close to the city! This article will tell you about five of the best spots to get your fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, baked goods and more!
Planting season is almost here, which means fresh fruit and vegetables will be making their way to your belly soon. Even though Markham is a technology giant and an urban centre, there are plenty of local Markham farms that offer fresh fruit and produce. Farmer’s markets are great places to do a one-stop shop and get everything you need to keep your family healthy and happy.
Starting again for the season on May 7th, this Saturday morning farmer’s market has live entertainment, fresh produce that is local and some organic, plus baked good, preserves, flowers and more. Fashioned with a turn of the century look, this quaint market has vendors like Happy Tummy (baked goods), Olive That! (artisan olive oils and vinegars) and Wing Cho farms (organic fruit and vegetables).
You’re going to have to wait until June to visit this fresh market, but it will be worth the wait! Open every day but Sunday through the summer and early fall, they start the season with pick your own or picked strawberries. They also offer their own sweet corn and pumpkins and sell produce from other local Ontario farms. The Molasses Crinkle cookies are a favourite, along with many other baked goods you can get.
Located in Unionville’s downtown, this market also doesn’t open until June, but has a number of tasty and unique vendors to please everyone’s palette. Food vendors and farmers sell everything from smoked meats, coffee, breads and of course, fresh produce. If you need a bottle of wine, the Willow Springs Winery will definitely finish off your grocery list and you’ll have everything you need for the week.
Open 7 days a week starting in June, this indoor and outdoor farmer’s market offers a field-to-table experience, with many vendors selling local, fresh produce. You’ll purchase everything directly from the grower and bulk prices are the best here.
Not technically a farmer’s market, the Organics Farm does deserve an honourable mention considering they sell completely certified organic produce and naturally-raised meat, among other goodies. You can pick your own strawberries or apples, or just head on in to the store and pick up asparagus, raspberries and other organic vegetables. As well, they sell local honey and baked goods that are too sweet to pass up! They also sell pastured beef and pork that is hormone and antibiotic free, and it tastes absolutely delicious!
