While the weather has been quite unpredictable lately, spring is finally here. Once those final bits of snow have melted off of your Markham lawn, it will be time to get your spring cleaning and maintenance tasks done. These ensure that your home stays in prime shape and keeps its value for many years to come. It also increases your curb appeal, so when you drive up to it or people walk by, you get a sense of beauty.
1. Get up on the roof
Canadian winters can be really hard on a Markham home’s roof. Get your ladder out and get right up there and inspect it. Even if your roof is fairly new or will need replacing soon, damage can occur from wind, ice and snow. What happens when there is damage? Water can leak into your home and that can be nasty and cause you bigger headaches than you’d ever want.
2. Clear the gutters
Since you’re up on the roof, clear your gutters. Remove any debris that has accumulated so that they can work more efficiently, pulling water away from your home. If water builds up, it can damage your roof and again, cause water damage inside your home.
3. Service your AC unit
Better to do it before you need it, change the filter in your AC unit and clean the coils. If you really aren’t sure what you are doing, enlist the help of a qualified heating and cooling contractor in Markham. A properly-maintained unit will run much more efficiently, which means less money on your already-exorbitant Hydro bills. As well, it reduces the chance that it will break down on a 30-degree plus day in July.
4. Clean and repair windows, doors and screens
Winter, while it looks so pretty in photos, is actually quite a dirty season. The salt that is placed on Markham roads often makes its way towards your home and you can see it on all exterior surfaces. Spring is the best time to pull off all the screens and give them a good wash and repair if needed. Washing your windows in the spring makes so much sense, because it isn’t too cold that the water will freeze and it isn’t too hot that it will evaporate before your windows are clean.
5. Trim back your gardens
If you didn’t do it in the fall, trim back your gardens and get rid of any dead plants that didn’t make it through the winter. Typically, you should trim the following in the spring:
· Dead annuals
· Perennials that were left standing in the winter for protection
· Woody perennials that won’t bloom
· Evergreens that need a tidy
· Ornamental grasses that were left for interest
You’ll also want to be proactive against weed growth and get a few things set up to ensure your gardens are free of weeds this summer.
