Whether you live in Markham or are visiting the area, there are five spots that you absolutely must check out this summer in Markham.
A huge farm that lets you pick their bounty, Whittamore’s Farm is not just amazing in the summer, it is great for spring and fall too. Unfortunately, you’ll want to enjoy it as soon as you can, as it is closing for good in the fall. Right now strawberries, raspberries, green peas, snow peas, sugar snap peas, new potatoes, and green and yellow beans are in season and ready for you to pick at this farm. They’ve also got a big playground for the kids, with wagon rides, pillow trampolines, a web climber, duck races, sand play, bouncers and barn animals.
Don’t sit and watch out the window on those rainy summer days. Head to the Markham Museum, a 25-acre museum located in the heart of Markham. With collections and exhibits, plus educational programs, camps and much more, you and your family will learn about the history of Markham, all while having fun. Check out their event calendar for all of their special events.
Pack a picnic and head to one of Markham’s best parks. Milne Dam Conservation Park is a clean and beautiful piece of nature in the middle of the city. Go for a hike, search for deer, watch the ducks in the pond and enjoy the silence. There are barbeques for cooking and picnic tables to set up on. The tall trees are gorgeous, winter, spring, summer and fall.
This historic route is the place to be for shopping, dining and just browsing in the summer. You’ll feel as though you are living in 1794, as many of the buildings are virtually unchanged along Main Street with a European feel. Visit the resident art galleries or many boutique shops and find something unique for your home or office. Sit out on a patio and enjoy the view while watching others walk on by. The street also hosts many special events all year round, including live music, yoga, a farmer’s market and many other annual celebrations.
The perfect spot to visit in any season, Toogood Pond Park is a 33-hectare park with an abundance of wildlife, a naturalized pond and a marsh. With beautifully-landscaped walkways, park benches and picnic tables, Toogood Pond Park is where you should head to with a picnic basket and the entire family in tow. Spend an afternoon here exploring or quietly reading a book under a tree. Pop into the store and grab a drink or an ice cream and then sit on the patio and watch the geese in the pond. The pond has historic meaning for the City of Markham, as it was a pond that powered the grist mill in the 1840s. The park is free with free parking.
