While Markham is well-known for their Chinese cuisine, there is more to Markham’s dining scene than that. Markham has been blessed with an abundance of great restaurants and there are five that you absolutely must try. This list has everything from casual to the most fine of dining.
The School restaurant has been the talk of Markham before Markham became what it is today, and people are still talking. Housed in the original Hagerman Corner school building, built in 1988, this fine dining restaurant is well-known not just for the atmosphere, but for exemplary service and delicious food. Definitely somewhere you want to go if you are looking to impress, menu items include Osso Bucco, roast prime rib of beef with Yorkshire pudding, and lobster risotto. The dessert cart will have you rethinking how full your tummy really is.
Upscale casual dining at Smash Kitchen & Bar means menu items like Piri Piri Cornish hen, Surf & Turf (not your usual – this one’s got pork belly and grilled octopus!), and their famous buttermilk fried chicken. You also can’t leave this restaurant without trying their homemade mini donuts paired with one of their many signature cocktails (fire cracker shrimp Caesar anyone?). They’ve got a number of rooms for private dining and groups, as well as set menus.
This restaurant is a steak and seafood restaurant that has been pleasing Markham residents for over 36 years! Winning awards of excellence, Peter’s is renowned for a romantic atmosphere and delicious food. Caeser salad is prepared right at your table and roses are given to the ladies at the door. The little touches seem to make this restaurant very popular with Markham regulars. The steaks are what Peter’s is known for, but the seafood is also world-class.
The jewel of Unionville, Ambiyan won’t put you to sleep with its traditional Indian menu. Markham lacks many Indian restaurants, so it’s great to have one to make up for that. They’ve got everything from pakoras to vindaloo to lamb roganjosh. Your senses will be delighted. If you are in a hurry, feel free to order online. The lunch value combo is a hot deal at only $10 for the vegetarian meal.
This one will get you driving a bit, as it is actually located in Stouffville, but it will be worth it. A great spot for the entire family, this casual restaurant serves what they call “great food at great value”. You’ll find all of the basics of a bar and grill on the menu, with some very unique items like Seoul Poutine (ribeye, kimchi, scallions, Quebecois curds and Korean bbq sauce) or the vodka and soda haddock. Prices are seriously reasonable and the reviews are fantastic.
